Visibility Vest Handouts Cape Town traffic Department

The Cape Town Traffic Department pulled over cyclists for their own safety this morning, doing good deeds in the process.

Cape Town Traffic Department set out to do good deeds today, for motorists and cyclists alike. Kommetjie road is notorious for hit and run incidents involving cyclists and pedestrians. The road is famous for it’s traffic due to ongoing construction and roadworks.

The CTTD was seen standing on the side of the dangerous road and stopping all cyclists and motorcyclists, they where handing out FREE high visibility vests as a safety campaign for cyclists and motorcyclists to stay visible.

Cycling is a massive part of Cape Town roads, with events such as the Cape Argus Cycle Tour, which is set to take place in March meaning the roads are full with cyclists training for the event.

The news of the deed was brought to light on Facebook this morning by the user Odette Ste Jeanne Butcher,

“Just saw Cape Town traffic department stopping cyclists & motorcyclists to give them free visibility vests to wear. Look for the positives in our country and you will find them. #ProudlySouthAfrican #KnowledgeIsPower”

High visibility vests are designed to reflect light and make drivers aware of a cyclists and motorcyclists.

“Being visible on the bike isn’t just about being seen while riding at night, it’s just as vital whatever time of day you decide to go for a spin.”

“Reflective clothing works under an artificial light source, like street or headlights. As reflective clothing works by reflecting light back to the source, the more direct the light beam, the more effective the reflection.” – Cycling Weekly

We love this concept, well done City of Cape Town!
