A woman dating a South African man discovers that the word “Imagine” carries a completely different attitude.
South Africa (05 January 2025) – Just when you think you have got the language figured out, South Africans find a way to remix English all over again.
A woman dating a South African man recently shared a moment that perfectly sums up how our local lingo once again confuses the rest of the world.
In her video, she explains how she was venting about work, telling her boyfriend a story about a colleague doing something completely out of line. Mid-story, he responded with a simple, “Imagine.”
And this confused her.
Because to anyone outside of South Africa, “imagine” usually means exactly that, picture it, right ? But in this case, there was nothing to imagine. In South Africa, imagine doesn’t mean imagine at all. It means the audacity. It’s disbelief. Shock. A silent judgement.
South Africans in the comments wasted no time confirming it. Some joked that the correct response to “imagine” should always be heavy on the your “Yoh”. Others pointed out that reading through the comments made it very clear that South Africans don’t just speak English, they have created their own version of it.
