Wildlife presenter Robert Irwin has shared his list of birds with the best ‘Rizz’, and Red-crested Korhaan’s dramatic courtship display earns a spot.
South Africa (20 January 2026) – “Rizz” might have peaked as Oxford’s Word of the Year back in 2023, but clearly, the concept of undeniable charm is still flying high, literally. This time, it’s wildlife conservationist and TV personality Robert Irwin who has brought the term back into the spotlight, ranking birds from around the world based on what he calls their “rizz”.
And proudly flying the South African flag on his list is the Red-crested Korhaan, a striking ground dwelling bird native to the bushveld. The Red-crested Korhaan made his top five thanks to confidence. Or, as Robert describes it, a slightly dramatic approach to romance.
The bird’s courtship display is anything but subtle. Males launch themselves into the air, freeze mid-flight, then plummet back toward the ground in what looks like a full-on freefall, only pulling out at the last possible moment. Very theatrical. That daring aerial performance earns the Korhaan a solid place on the rizz rankings, even if it’s a bit of a “look at me” moment.
Beyond South Africa’s representative, Robert’s rankings featured some familiar and not so familiar birds. The Peacock made the cut for it’s dazzling looks. The Palm Cockatoo impressed with its musical talents, the Cassowary also made the list.
Taking the top spot, however, was the Wedge-tailed Eagle, crowned for its quiet confidence and lifelong loyalty.
But for local bird lovers, the Red-crested Korhaan stole the show.
