Tom Read Wilson has once again made South Africans smile from ear to ear with his charming take on another proudly Mzansi expression.
South Africa (09 October 2025) – Tom Read Wilson has once again captured South African hearts and this time he’s taking us on a linguistic dance floor with his latest “Word of the Day”: Jol.
If you’ve been online at all over the past year, you’ll probably know Tom, the charming British gent with a velvet voice, a theatre background and a growing obsession with South African slang. From perfectly pronouncing Tsek! to unpacking the deep layers of Don’t tune me grief, he’s become something of an honorary Saffa.
And now, the UK celeb has done it again.
In his latest viral video, Tom beams as he rolls out the word Jol with the kind of joy and flair that only he can muster. “Today’s word,” he says, in that delightful, polished tone, “is a terrific South African one for a very zestful party, edging towards a shindig”.
“But what I love about it, is it’s both verb and noun… it’s jol”.
What makes these clips so special isn’t just his pronunciation or the charm of his British accent… it’s the way he celebrates South African culture with such curiosity and affection. Every video feels like a love letter to Mzansi’s colourful language, full of humour, warmth and ubuntu.
South Africans have flooded his comments with laughter and love, teaching him new slang and encouraging him to take his “word of the day” lessons even further. One person commented, “Are you part South African??? !” Another wrote, “Fabulous Tom!”
Look, when a Brit like Tom starts “jolling” with South Africans, you know the vibe is lekker.
