Save Giraffes Now, an organisation based in Kenya, recently built a raft to rescue an isolated female giraffe and reuniting her with her kind.
Kenya (09 December 2020) – Save Giraffes Now has been working for months on a project to move a group of isolated giraffes trapped on a shrinking island due to rising waters. A giraffe, named Asiwa, was recently the first rescued and reunited with her fellow giraffes at a nearby sanctuary.
To get Asiwa and the other giraffes from the island back to the mainland, a custom raft was built to transport them safely across the crocodile-infested waters. We have to just say we feel like a moment was missed and they really should have called the custom raft a “Girafft”… Sorry, we just had to share that lame one to get it out of our heads.
The giraffe trapped on the island are all endangered as they are part of the Rothschild’s subspecies. It is estimated that there are only around 1600 left in the wild.

For months leading up to the evacuation, the rangers have been using small rafts to take supplies over the waters to help feed and care for the giraffes. Now that the rescue has begun, the giraffes are being kept in a holding pen until they are all together. Then they will be transported to the 4,400-acre fenced sanctuary, where they will have space, protection and an abundance of grazing.
