A man with almost nothing is inspiring a nation with his love for his best friend!
Grahamstown, South Africa – The Grahamstown SPCA recently shared a story about a patient that was recently treated at the SPCA Clinic written by veterinarian Dr Amy Jackson-Moss.
“When I arrived for work at the SPCA Centre on Friday 12 April, a man with a dog was waiting on the grass outside our gates. When I asked if I could help he told me that there was something wrong with his dog as it had not eaten for a few days. I soon noticed that there was not a car in sight and when I asked how he’d got there, he told me he had walked from his home to the SPCA that morning – a journey well over 10km.”
He even added that he had walked very slowly that morning because he knew that his dog, Blackie, was very sick.
After talking to him some more, he explained to the Doctor that he didn’t have a job and spent his days searching for food on the rubbish tip for himself and Blackie.
“I was shocked as this was a dog in excellent condition, well looked after and she was even sterilised – which he had arranged himself!”
He immediately said that he didn’t have money for medicines, but the Doctor agreed that she would treat the pup at no cost to him and would do whatever it took to get her back in good health.
“With no way of contacting him other than his address, I promised that I would do everything I could and I would bring her back to his home when she was better.
Today we returned Blackie to her home and owner. I’m not sure who was more excited to be honest – him or Blackie! He simply could not believe that she was still alive when he saw her and Blackie was in her absolute element to see him – jumping, wagging her tail and even barking!”
The Doctor sent Blackie home with a goodie bag of dog food, a new collar and lead and some food for her owner as a thank you for taking such good care of his dog!
