Some of our most beautiful indigenous fauna and flora can now be found right in the middle of the Mother City!
Cape Town, South Africa (20 August 2026) – The Cape Town Central City Improvement District has revealed its ongoing project to bring a touch of nature into the Mother City’s busiest streets.
Local street artists, the HandCantrol360 crew, have been commissioned to give special attention to a number of bollards in town. A good deal of bollards have already been painted throughout the month so far, featuring indigenous southern African birds and flowers.
“They were commissioned by the CCID’s Urban Management department…” the CCID shares. “When the project is complete, 84 bollards will have been hand-painted with meticulous attention to detail.”
The hand-painted birds were the first to grace the city’s bollards. Take a stroll along Upper Waterkant St, and one might find a number of colourful feathered friends! Including the southern double-collared sunbird, crowned lapwing, Cape rockjumper, amethyst sunbird, and the blue crane, South Africa’s national bird.
The flowers – the bird of paradise, watsonia, dierama, oxalis, strawflower, agapanthus, arum lily, ‘geelblombos’, Bulbine frutescens, and the metaplasia aurea – were commissioned to complement the adjacent colourful birds.
The manager of CCID Urban Management, Kally Benito, says the artworks of indigenous flora and fauna are delightful and transformative.
