Hope was rekindled and spirits were uplifted with every note that echoed through the halls of Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital and Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital this World Leukaemia Day!
Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (08 September 2025) – In a powerful display of music’s healing and comforting power, the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra and the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra recently filled the halls of Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital and Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital with a series of “Healing Harmonies” concerts.
These special performances, held in partnership with DKMS Africa for World Leukaemia Day on 4 September, aimed to bring moments of reflection, awareness and unity.
From Gauteng to KwaZulu-Natal, DKMS Africa came together with patients, healthcare practitioners, families, and health department representatives to raise awareness of blood cancers and blood disorders, share knowledge, and show solidarity. Little warriors also got to enjoy fun activities, enjoying a break away from their hospital wards.
The initiative was part of a broader effort by DKMS Africa to raise awareness about leukaemia and other blood disorders, which affect thousands of people across the globe, including Zibusiso, who was diagnosed with T-Cell Lymphoblastic Leukaemia earlier this year and Godfrey from Mpumalanga, who has been living with Aplastic Anaemia since 2023 and is in urgent need of a lifesaving stem cell transplant.
World Leukaemia Day is a global campaign and the one day of the year when people from all around the world can come together to help raise awareness of leukaemia. By raising awareness on leukaemia and educating the world on the signs and symptoms of this condition, organisations can work together to help leukaemia patients get diagnosed and provide better outcomes for them.
“We were honoured to be joined by distinguished guests like KZN Department of Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane. Her presence underscored the importance of collective action in the fight against blood cancer,” DKMS Africa said.
The organisation extended its thanks to all its teams and partners who made these heartfelt events possible and stood in solidarity with patients during their bravest battles.
“Awareness inspires action, and together, we can ensure more patients find their lifesaving stem cell donor match.”
