Thanks to a generous donation to fund essential satellite tracking and veterinary care, Elephants Alive will be able to continue its vital work to safeguard local communities while the Kruger’s majestic herds roam safely.

Kruger National Park, South Africa (06 July 2026) – Majestic in size, strength, and beauty, elephants rightfully earn their place in the Big Five. Protecting them is thus a vital mission, and one that Elephants Alive has championed for over 25 years.

As part of safeguarding these giants and their habitats, the organisation also promotes harmonious coexistence between wildlife and local communities. This human-elephant management is crucial because for families living along the western boundary of the Kruger National Park, these incredible creatures can also bring sleepless nights, damaged crops, and an uncertain future.

Recent devastating floods in the Kruger National Park further disrupted traditional elephant migration routes, forcing some herds into neighbouring villages in search of food.

Too often, these encounters end in tragedy, with the elephants ultimately being labelled “problem animals.” To break this cycle, Elephants Alive uses innovative, non-lethal solutions that foster coexistence between people and elephants.

Their Elephant Shepherd teams guide animals away from crops, while community projects such as beehive fences, chilli deterrents and watchtowers help prevent conflict before it begins.

At the heart of that strategy is satellite tracking by fitting elephants with tracking collars. This technology allows conservationists to monitor movement in real time, allowing teams to intervene before elephants reach nearby communities.

It serves as a critical step in ensuring safety, conservation and co-existence – but one that also comes with specialised equipment, veterinary support and helicopter time all contributing to a high cost.

After learning about this vital work, Hot Cares gladly and generously stepped in to assist with a R79,000 donation to help fund a new satellite collar and veterinary costs, helping Elephants Alive continue one of South Africa’s most important conservation initiatives.

This support will go along way in helping elephants roam freely while at the same time ensuring farming families have greater protection for their livelihoods.

“It means fewer dangerous encounters. And it means conservation teams can continue proving that coexistence is not only possible, but sustainable,” Hot Cares said.

CEO, co-founder and principal researcher of Elephants Alive, Dr Michelle Henley, emphasised the importance of this wildlife intervention and working with and alongside communities:

“This is not about a single elephant or a single collar. It’s about building a functional interface between a rapidly shifting landscape and the people who live within it.”
