Emmanuel Matsane stunned the socks off his employers and later, South Africans across the country. Soon, everybody will know his name.
Centurion, South Africa (25 August 2025) – Until that moment, Emmanuel’s role took shape behind the scenes. Setting tables, washing dishes, and working in the kitchen at Kleinkaap Boutique Hotel.
But once he took the keys at the front of the house, everyone was amazed.
Emmanuel’s love for music started when he was just 15, Maroela Media reports. His father, part of their church orchestra, encouraged him to learn keyboard so they could take turns during services. That’s where he found his escape.
With no formal training and unable to read sheet music, he taught himself to play by ear, listening closely and blending melodies together until they felt right.
On Friday, Emmanuel’s self-taught skill finally took centre stage in the most unexpected way.
Sitting at the piano in the hotel’s restaurant, he played a medley of his favourite worship and R&B pieces from memory.
The video of his performance spread like wildfire online, clocking more than 324,000 views. South Africans quickly rallied to get him out of the kitchen and in front of the keys permanently.
“This is such a powerful reminder to look for and appreciate the talents around us,” wrote Linda Fortuin.
“Talent has a way of revealing itself when given the chance. This man has shown that his gift belongs at the piano, and he should be given the opportunity to share it!” wrote Myron Mer.
