Partnering with the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day initiative, the school helped bring comfort and kindness to elderly residents at a Johannesburg retirement village.
Johannesburg, South Africa (26 June 2026) – As South Africa marks Mandela Month in the lead-up to Nelson Mandela Day on 18 July, schools, organisations and individuals across the country are already finding meaningful ways to give back.
One such act of kindness recently unfolded in Johannesburg, where the learners from Jeppe High School for Girls joined forces with the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day initiative to bring warmth and comfort to elderly residents at Radio Cottages in Jan Hofmeyr.
The visit saw handmade blankets delivered to the retirement village, which provides safe and affordable accommodation to 38 elderly women. Many of the residents rely on government pensions and have little or no family support, making community gestures like these especially meaningful during the winter months.
This was also an opportunity to spend time with the residents, share smiles and remind them that they are not forgotten.
The handmade blankets, lovingly created through the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day movement, offered warmth against the winter chill, while the visit itself brought moments of connection that left a lasting impression on everyone involved.
As Mandela Month continues, stories like these serve as a reminder that giving back does not always require grand gestures.
The school also thanked the wider Jeppe community for contributing their time, talent and generosity to help make the initiative possible, ensuring that dozens of elderly women will enjoy a little extra warmth this winter.
