Felix Gosher hosts an annual event for the elderly community in Johannesburg; he invites seniors that have never been in an aeroplane to join him for their first flight.
Johannesburg, South Africa – Wendy Chadwick wanted to give a shout-out to someone in her community that goes above and beyond to bring joy to the elderly, a man by the name of Felix Gosher who started a project called Elders Flight, to take elderly people in aeroplanes for the first time!
In 2016, while working as a pilot for the UN, Felix noticed the joy on every child’s face when he would land his plane in the remote villages of South Sudan. After being locked down in a small village waiting for a conflict between the Sudanese Peoples Liberations Army and rebels to die down, Felix became inspired to start a project to fly children.
He reached out to all his aviation contacts and on the 2nd of September 2016, they hosted their first annual Children’s Flight. The event still takes place but in 2018 a big supporter of the event, Ana Luis, asked Felix if they could extend the event for the elderly too. Felix loved the idea and started making the arrangements to launch an event dedicated to the elderly.
His focus is specifically on senior citizens that have never been in an aeroplane before and wanted to tick the exciting experience off their bucket lists. Felix also invites people with disabilities, who have never had the opportunity to fly in a plane.
The best part is, as a pilot, Felix can bring together all his friends at the Rand Airport to give these elders the best day out. Through sponsors, pilots, private plane owners and the likes, he is able to bring together so many people who can make the day special.
The event takes place once a year now and brings joy to everyone involved. Felix was the first head boy at Trinity House back in 2000, so he invited the school’s Marimba band and orchestra to provide entertainment over breakfast.
The elders were also given a delightful cake and exciting goodie bags before jetting off around the Rand Airport. After their flights, the elders were treated to an airshow.
Take a look at the exciting day below. If you would like to get involved in the 2020 event, you can contact Felix via his Facebook page, Elders Flight or via WhatsApp +27664850407 or email [email protected].
