The Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital has a few tortoise patients that need some delicious plants in their diet; the vet is asking for donations from local gardeners.
Johannesburg, South Africa (24 June 2022) – The Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital has a few tortoises in its care, and they like a varied diet of plants. The vet is asking for donations of plants to be able to feed the recovering tortoises, so they can regain strength before being sent back to the wild.
They hope to reach gardening enthusiasts who will have the types of plants needed for the tortoises. Anyone able to donate can drop off their clippings at the hospital.
“GOT PLANTS? To all our supporters out there who are avid gardeners, you can assist us in keeping our tortoises in peak health by dropping off your plant prunings at the hospital!
The following plants would be REALLY appreciated by our gentle giants:”
- Geraniums (Pelargoniums)
- Spineless prickly pear cactus (Opuntia ficus indica)
- Mother of pearl plant (or any of the Crassulacea family)
- Spekboom (Portulacaria afra)
- Heartleaf ice plant (Artesia cordiflora)
- Varkore (or any of the Cotyledon family)
- Spiny cucumbers/African horned cucumbers (Cucumber metuliferus)
- any of the stone crop plants (Sedum family) would all be suitable
“Our tortoise patients would be very excited to help you dispose of your trimmings!
We treat indigenous wildlife, free of charge, relying on the community for donations and support.”
If you have plants to spare, they will come in handy. Take a look at the photos of the plants needed here.
