K9 Jess is back to her daily love of working to protect the wildlife of South Africa; she recently completed chemotherapy and has bounced back thanks to the unwaivering support of her carers and generous veterinarians.

South Africa (10 June 2026) – Jess the K9 was diagnosed with mammary gland cancer, and the diagnosis set off a host of compassion, care and a fighting spirit within Jess’s community. The incredible hound received the best care anyone could hope for, and recently celebrated her last chemo session.

The SANParks Honorary Rangers shared that Jess initially had surgery, thanks to Dr Debbie English, followed by meeting Dr Brandan Janssens from Vetscape Animal Hospital, a specialist oncologist who provided the team with his guidance during her treatment journey.

Then, when it came time for the treatment, Dr Coenie Diedericks and Dr Henri Neethling from HN Oncology in Nelspruit donated the chemotherapy medicine needed for her to fight this battle. They also thanked Dr Jacqui Hooton from Platorand Animal Clinic, who provided ongoing care during this journey. Lastly, they thanked the Hill’s Pet Nutrition team for covering the specialised food needed, which was formulated for dogs suffering illness and undergoing treatment.

Every hand played a role in making sure Jess got the very best care, ensuring she could be back on the ground doing the vital work of protecting South Africa’s wildlife.

“Today (5th of June), we are overjoyed to share that Jess has made an incredible recovery and is back on duty—strong, happy, and doing what she loves.

Thank you to everyone who played a part in giving Jess a second chance.”

I am a regular visitor to the Kruger National Park and always feel a great sense of pride and joy when I cross through the gates and see these incredible animals doing their duty for their country. We wave at the teams as they walk through the park, sniffing out snares and poachers, and doing all manner of conservation work we can only dream of. But today, I sit here reflecting on the humans who make it possible for these working dogs to live life to the fullest.

Thank you for every effort, for every ounce of care and for every day you put into loving these animals. Working dogs play a vital role in conservation, and seeing humans help them thrive fills my heart.

So well done, Jess, on getting through chemo, and well done to every human who helped her get there! We see you, and we honour you.
