True conservation goes hand-in-hand with caring for the community. The Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary recently teamed up with Threads of Kindness to deliver a rainbow of hand-knitted blankets, beanies, and jerseys to local schoolchildren as the winter season settles in the region.

Mpumalanga, South Africa (22 June 2026) – Beyond its invaluable work in rescuing, rehabilitating, and rewilding rhinos, the Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary understands that true conservation includes people. By partnering with local communities in the Mpumalanga region, the organisation actively helps lift up the families and children living alongside these protected areas.

Last week, this community-centred partnership brought a wave of bright, beautiful warmth to some very deserving little ones.

Volunteers from the Threads of Kindness charity initiative visited Care for Wild, teaming up with the rhino sanctuary’s educational facilitators for a special trip to a local community school. Together, they hand-delivered a collection of lovingly crafted, hand-knitted items.

Each jersey, beanie and blanket was a rainbow of colour and a precious gift for every child who received one.

“They have spent months crafting these gifts, and every single one has been made with so much love, care and dedication,” shared Care for Wild.

“As winter settles in across Care for Wild and the surrounding communities, these gifts are especially appreciated, bringing both warmth and comfort during the colder months.”

Beyond its primary focus on rhino conservation, the organisation is dedicated to supporting families living in and around the community it operates, especially during times of need.

During the winter months, temperatures drop to well below freezing in the surrounding communities, and essential clothing items are hard to find. Thanks to donations and handmade garments from volunteers all over the world, Care for Wild is able to make multiple distributions of blankets, hats, scarves, and clothes to the women, children and elderly of the community.

From colourful, hand-knitted blankets and jerseys to donated winter wear, jackets, and socks, every item is always greatly appreciated. Visits to the community are always filled with smiles and songs, and the children’s faces light up when they are handed these items and carry them home with so much love.

Threads of Kindness’ recent visit was no different. For the children, receiving a brightly coloured jersey, beanie, or blanket is about so much more than staying warm. It is a reminder that someone, somewhere, cared enough to make something just for them.

Care for Wild expressed its immense gratitude to the charity and the hands that stitched together these items with love.

“The warmth you provide reaches far beyond the wool itself.”
