The Oyster Box’s resident celebrity, Skabenga the cat and former stray, celebrated not only another big birthday bash but a life turned around!
Umhlanga, South Africa (11 October 2023) — Although it’s hard to believe when encountering Skabenga the cat’s natural star power presence, many moons ago he was not the celebrity cat he is today.
If you haven’t met Skabenga before (either in person or on social media) you’re missing out on a provincial treasure and a big part of the reason the Oyster Box has as many guests as it does (at least, according to Skabenga).

As his name suggests, Skabenga began his journey at the hotel as a wanderer; a stray who needed a place to call home. His taste was very good even back then, and soon he won over the hearts of both staff and guests who decided to keep him around.
Today, the top cat has become part of the furniture and is even listed as part of the hotel’s team. Skabenga holds many important responsibilities that pay for his stay, including napping in the lobby, patrolling when necessary, checking in on guest relations, posing for photos with fans and of course, approving chef-prepared treats.
