The Ladles of Love volunteers brave the horrid Cape Storms to bring warmth and comfort to those who have no place to call home. They are adding a touch of warmth and comfort to winter days.
Cape Town, South Africa (07 July 2025) – Winter is always a time for South Africans to hibernate, stay home and cosy and to weather the storms that roll in. But for a group of volunteers, winter is the time to take action, to cook with love and to hand out ladles of warmth and comfort. The Ladles of Love volunteers are total heroes, braving the latest storm to make sure people had warm bellies and full hearts.
Ladles of Love has fed millions of South Africans and will continue to do so for years to come. In July 2014, Danny Diliberto, with the help of a chef and some volunteers, started cooking pots of soup every Tuesday from the restaurant he co-founded, Doppio Zero, in St Georges Mall.
Over the following five years, the organisation grew. With the help of schools and other soup kitchens, food was served four times a week in the city centre. By March 2020, Ladles served about 14,000 meals a month. And then the pandemic hit.
The organisation ramped up efforts to help feed as many people as possible. The pandemic left thousands of people without food. Ladles of Love started collecting food for soup kitchens, making sandwiches and breaking world records for canned food.
Today, the organisation plays a vital role in the lives of people who find themselves on hard times, facing unimaginable circumstances and in need of a little comfort.
The team’s volunteers are incredible, but they always need more helping hands.

In weather like this, it’s more than food – it’s comfort, care, and a reminder that someone sees you.
