New lifeguards join the growing number of beach heroes at Clifton Surf Lifesaving Club, ready to keep the community safe this summer.
Cape Town, South Africa (31 October 2024) – As we cross over into November, we can no longer deny that summer is here. We may still have some miserable days, but most are now due to be sunny and bright; that means many beach days. In preparation for safe beach days, the Clifton Surf Lifesaving Club (CSLC) has concluded a successful off-season training programme, equipping 144 lifeguards who will help keep Cape Town beaches safe this summer.
Recognising the importance of refreshing lifesaving skills and knowledge, CSLC’s training sessions ensure all lifeguards are prepared to handle emergencies with confidence, enhancing safety for the community.
This past winter saw the training of 29 new junior lifeguards, 6 new lifeguards, 24 lifeguard upgrades and 74 successful retests for the new season.
Head Instructor Teagan Thompson praised the team’s commitment to high standards: “The CSLC Instructing Team had a very busy off-season with three new lifeguard intake courses and two Lifeguard Upgrade courses. We also completed two IRB courses to upskill our existing members.”
This rigorous training programme aligns with CSLC’s mission to deliver world-class water safety, drowning prevention, and lifesaving sports programmes. The club is dedicated to building a team of lifeguards skilled in rescue, first aid, and leadership who embody the values of community service.
Clifton’s Voluntary Lifeguards, give of their time to keep the community safe however, there is more to it than just being a hero. With lifesaving sport set to make its Olympic debut in 2032, now is the perfect time to join a sport gaining global recognition and popularity.
