2023 has five long weekends just waiting to be used; this is how to maximise your leave opportunities, giving you a few extra days off.

South Africa (04 January 2023) – At the start of each year, we sit down with our calendars and plan. Each year, we also take a look at all the public holidays and where they fall in that year. This is done for planning small getaways and ensuring you know which are the ideal days to take leave to maximise your own time off.

We hope that highlighting these days, gives people opportunities to plan, whether that be a family trip, a perfect wedding date or just some extra time at home kicking your feet up. We do also advocate for the employer, so be sure that any leave taken is done so with keeping your employer happy too, give them enough notice and be sure your work is up to date.

Below are all the dates and days to add to your calendar for 2023. We will share some of our leave tips to ensure you get the longest holidays possible.

  • Human Rights Day – Tuesday, 21st March 2023
  • Good Friday – Friday, 7th April 2023
  • Family Day – Monday, 10th April 2023
  • Freedom Day – Thursday, 27th April 2022
  • Workers Day – Monday, 1st May 2023
  • Youth Day – Friday, 16th June 2023
  • National Women’s Day – Wednesday, 9th August 2023
  • Heritage Day – Sunday, 24th September 2023 – This holiday is observed on Monday, 25th September 2023.
  • Day of Reconciliation – Saturday, 16th December 2023
  • Christmas Day – Monday, 25th December 2023
  • Boxing Day – Tuesday, 26th December 2023

It is exciting to see that this year we have five long weekends in total. You can make them longer by taking one or two days and giving yourself four to five days off over those periods.

Usually, we come up with some clever way to take 18 days for just a few but this year, Easter Weekend and Freedom Day are too far apart to make sense. You would be better served to save your leave for December and a few extra long weekends this year. This year Freedom Day falls on a Thursday, so putting leave in for the 28th of April gives you five days off and you only get back to work on the 2nd of May 2023 – That is one day in exchange for five!!!

So there you have it, add a day or two to the long weekends and you can have a few good breaks within the year.
