The 9Miles Project will host this year’s event at Muizenberg Beach as improvements begin at Strandfontein Pavilion, continuing its drive to support youth development through surfing and community action.
Cape Town, South Africa (12 March 2026) – Imagine riding out a wave with the colourful beach huts of Muizenberg Beach lining behind you. One of the most recognisable seaside backdrops in the country. That’s the setting awaiting the 2026 100Wave Challenge as it heads to a new beach, but the heart of the event remains exactly the same.
The 9Miles Project has announced that this year’s challenge will take place at Muizenberg Beach on Saturday, 2 May 2026, after upgrades at Strandfontein Pavilion were confirmed earlier than expected.
The pavilion is set to undergo significant improvements aimed at enhancing its facilities, accessibility and overall community experience. The upgrades are expected to be completed in 2026.
While this means the venue will not be able to host the event as originally planned, organisers say the investment in the space is something to celebrate.

Rather than slowing things down, the move to Muizenberg marks a new chapter for the initiative. The day will include a large beach clean-up initiative, creative art activations, live music, beach volleyball, an air track experience, sandcastle building for families, djembe drumming circles and a variety of interactive lawn games.
Founder of the 9Miles Project, Nigel Savel, says the organisation is embracing the change with optimism.
“The ocean has always taught us how to adapt. Conditions shift, tides change, but you keep paddling. The upgrades at Strandfontein Pavilion are a positive step for the community and while we’ll miss hosting the event there this year, we are confident that the 100Wave Challenge will be just as powerful at Muizenberg. What makes this day special isn’t the venue, it’s the people, the purpose and the young lives we are standing behind.”
The 100Wave Challenge calls on surfers, families, companies and supporters to ride 100 waves in a single day while raising funds for the organisation’s youth development programmes.
For 2026, the movement has set a fundraising goal of R250,000, with every wave surfed and every rand raised helping support stronger families and more resilient communities.
With the shoreline shifting from Strandfontein to Muizenberg this year, the mission remains the same, and that’s bringing people together.
