Through the Muddy Face Botswana Adventure Rally, the Hein family hopes to raise support for Team Zonke, a programme of the Maletsatsi Foundation that introduces children in alternative care to motorsport and outdoor adventure.
Johannesburg, South Africa (11 March 2026) – Later this month, the Hein family will head into the wilds of Botswana to take on one of Southern Africa’s toughest adventure rallies. But while the Muddy Face Botswana Adventure Rally promises more than 700 kilometres of sand tracks, navigation challenges and endurance stages, the journey means far more than just an adrenaline-filled road trip.
For the Hein family, (Mom, Dad, Sophie (13) and Harvey (11)), every kilometre travelled is about the children of Team Zonke. The programme forms part of The Maletsatsi Foundation, a South African non-profit organisation that supports children placed in alternative care after being declared in need of protection by the courts.
Thanks to Team Zonke, young people are introduced to motorsport and outdoor adventure.
For founder Tiffini Hein, affectionately known as “Mamma T” to the children involved, the rally has become a personal mission.
“As I enter the year that I turn 40, I decided there were a few new and exciting adventures that had to go on the bucket list. But if we’re going to do something hard and a little bit wild, we might as well do it for a reason.”
A twist that reflects the values the family hopes to model for their children. Mom and Sophie will be the drivers for the entire rally, leaving the boys firmly in the back seat for the adventure.
“It’s a wonderful reminder to our kids, and to ourselves, that dreams should never be limited by societal expectations,” says Hein. “Girls belong in the driver’s seat just as much as anyone else, and courage and capability have nothing to do with gender.”
The rally has also inspired a unique fundraising idea: Sponsor a Kilometre.
Supporters are invited to sponsor one or more kilometres of the family’s 700-kilometre journey, helping turn each stretch of road into meaningful support for the young people involved in Team Zonke.
