NSRI is making a splash in saving lives! With plans to expand its commitment to providing quality water safety education and hands-on experience, thousands more young people will be able to confidently swim and handle emergencies.
South Africa (25 March 2025) – Imagine a young girl or boy, once terrified of being near the ocean or the very thought of jumping into a pool, now empowered to dive in with confidence thanks to the invaluable work of volunteers who understand their backgrounds and are committed to giving them the freedom that comes with knowing how to swim and being water safe.
Saving lives is at the very core of the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), and with nearly 900,000 youngsters having been taught all about vital water safety, the organisation looks to double these numbers this year!
While the waters are undeniably unpredictable, the NSRI is working tirelessly on the ground to ensure that no child or person finds themselves in a position where they do not know the basic skills of how to protect themselves when uncertainty arises.
With a growing volunteer base of 78 Pink Buoy volunteers and 96 Drowning Prevention volunteers, the NSRI shared that it will be strengthening its educational outreach where it is needed the most, with the support of key partners such as local businesses and like-minded non-profit organisations. This joint effort will play a crucial role in this mission, helping to expand the reach and effectiveness of NSRI programmes.
“This year, we are placing a stronger emphasis on the quality of our educational content,” Nazreen explained.
“Our goal is not just to raise awareness but to ensure that our learners truly absorb the lessons and can swim confidently after completing our survival swimming courses. We believe that hands-on experience is key to building this confidence, and we are committed to providing a supportive learning environment.”
In addition to expanding its existing programmes, the NSRI is in the planning stages of special projects with key partners. These include expanding volunteer involvement and raising safety standards at water venues.
Through these impactful initiatives, more children will be better water-wise and get to enjoy South Africa’s beautiful waters!
