The little West Coast town of Hopefield is going to bloom with wildflowers and people who love to make things with their hands!

Hopefield, South Africa (09 September 2025) – From 8 to 11 October, Hopefield will host the Fynbos Quilt Festival, by the Good Hope Quilters Guild, where quilters and crafters from all over are heading to town for four days of exhibitions, workshops, and community get-togethers.

Over 500 visitors are expected to come and join in on the exciting fun.

It’s a rare opportunity for crafters and quilters to meet like-minded people (from South Africa and abroad), to shop for treasures, and to learn! Guests can sit in on classes that span one lesson and multiple days.

Classes will include everything from machine and improv piecing to botanical printing, hand and free-motion machine stitching, bag-making, needleturn appliqué, knitting, crochet, cyanotype fabric dyeing, and so much more. Plan ahead for your pick – there’s a lot to choose from.

The festival will also host fabric stalls, yarn tables, and machines to test-drive. Evenings will be just as fun with spitbraais, patch & pour nights, and sunset high teas in the West Coast Fossil Park.

Each day’s activities will be jam-packed from 8 am to 10 pm.

This year’s theme is Create. Connect. Care. and you’ll see it everywhere.

A community highlight of the festival will be its Hexagon Bee Hive Project, where people from all walks of life are sending in little hexagon pieces inspired by the West Coast – bees, flowers, birds, fynbos. Together they’ll form a huge installation, and the funds raised will support outreach work. Quilting for a good cause.

The quilt exhibition will also be in full swing. Every quilt entered will be juried to make sure it’s show-ready, but there’s no stiff judging or scores. Instead, two prizes of R3,500 are up for grabs: one picked by a surprise celebrity panel and another voted for by festival visitors.

In true small-town style, everything is close by. You can easily hop and skip between classes, shops, and exhibitions without needing to drive.

Accommodation is sorted too. School hostel rooms will be open for quilters to bunk together, share late-night laughs, and form the kind of friendships that often outlast the quilts themselves. For those wanting more privacy, guesthouses and B&Bs are dotted around town.

If crafting is your thing, then this festival is an easy yes. Tickets, classes, and details are available here.
