This year, the Western Cape Blood Service is calling on all heroes: whether you’re a regular donor, a “lapsed” donor who hasn’t visited in a while, or someone looking to give for the very first time, to make blood donation their most impactful New Year’s resolution yet.

Cape Town, South Africa (20 January 2026) – We all set goals in January, but how many of them can save a life?

The start of a new year is the perfect time to form habits that make a real difference. That’s why the Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) is encouraging all current donors, potential donors, and those who haven’t donated in a year or more (known as lapsed donors) to begin 2026 with purpose by making blood donation part of their New Year’s resolution.

Every year, thousands of patients across the province rely on donated blood. Whether it’s for surgery, cancer treatment, childbirth, or trauma care, the need is constant, and the demand for new donors is growing.

Start 2026 by Saving Lives

To inspire long-term commitment, WCBS has launched its 2026 Commitment Campaign as part of this month’s theme, “Share the Gift of Life.” The campaign encourages both new and existing donors to make blood donation a regular habit, rather than a once-off act.

“Starting the year with a commitment to donate blood is more than a resolution, it’s a promise to save lives, not just once, but all year long,” says Marike Carli, Public Relations Manager at WCBS.

“A single donation takes just 30 minutes, but regular donors help ensure that blood is always available when patients need it most.”

As part of the campaign, donors who commit to giving blood at least four times in 2026 will receive a limited-edition WCBS coffee plunger and mug as a token of appreciation.

Recruiting More Donors, Saving More Lives

This year, WCBS aims to have at least 72,000 active blood donors across the Western Cape – a target that could help save more than 216,000 lives, as one unit of blood can save up to three people. A key focus this year is on attracting 15,500 first-time donors, who are essential to building a resilient blood supply for the future.

In 2025, WCBS collected 174,989 units of blood and welcomed 14,179 new donors, thanks to the generosity of communities across the province.

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to every donor who helped save lives in 2025. In 2026, we’re asking even more people to join us to move from a once-off donation to an ongoing, lifesaving habit,” Carli adds.

Feeling Up to the Challenge?

If you are between 16 and 75 years old, weigh 50kg or more, are in good general health, and lead a safe sexual lifestyle, you may be eligible to donate. The donation process takes only 30 minutes, but its impact can last a lifetime.
