Cape Town, South Africa (26 November 2024) – Seven amazing women, each with a unique story of courage and overcoming breast cancer like true warriors, recently reclaimed their confidence.
An event held by Reach for Recovery saw seven breast cancer survivors from Worcester make a meaningful journey to the Tygerberg office, where they received silicone prostheses for the first time.
According to Reach for Recovery, which offers emotional and practical support to those facing the dreadful illness, the occasion marked a significant milestone for six of these seven women, who had never been fitted with a prosthesis before.
“The atmosphere was filled with joy and empowerment as these courageous women gazed into mirrors, their faces lighting up with newfound confidence.
“Among them was the 82-year-old matriarch, who had undergone a mastectomy 26 years ago; this visit marked the first time she received a proper prosthesis,” shared Reach for Recovery’s National Manager and Tygerberg Chair, Stephanie van Deventer.
Leila, an 80-year-old volunteer with CANSA (Cancer Association of South Africa), played a vital role in arranging this uplifting visit. She and the group, known as the “Survivor Angels,” have been actively raising awareness about breast cancer within their communities in Worcester. Their enthusiasm and dedication exemplify the spirit of survival and support.
“Special thank you to Francina, one of our Tygerberg volunteers, for all the effort put in to liaise with Leila to make these women’s dream of travelling to Tygerberg come true,” Stephanie added.
