Bucket List

Everyone dreams of travelling across the globe, seeing new sights, tasting new foods and collecting stamps in a passport but sometimes local is also lekker! These are some bucket list ideas…

Experts say spending money on experiences rather than on things will make you happier. And what better experience is there than travel? Here are places that should definitely be on your bucket list. It consists of both local and international destinations which would be an awesome addition to your list.

Full moon hike up Lions Head

The hour-long hike up to the top is a popular Capetonian tradition during full moon. The route up the mountain is always bustling on a clear night which gives the mountain a festive feel. So, gather your hiking team and their torches and dangle your legs over the edge and look over the vibrant city in the darkness.

Take a ride on the Franschhoek wine tram

Leave the stress of modern life, and your car, behind when you take a trip on the charming Franschhoek Wine Tram. Journey through rolling vineyards in an open-sided tram and open-air tram-bus stopping at some of South Africa’s oldest and most distinguished wine estates.

Picnic at Cape Point

Cape Point makes for a great get away from the CBD. Its two most popular areas for picnics and braais are Buffels Bay and Bordjiesdrif, overlooking the False Bay area. They are complete with grassy spots filled with flora which will flourish in spring. With its braai areas and safe tidal pools, the reserve is perfect for a trip with your friends. Alternatively, you could take advantage of the spring specials where two kids (aged 6-16) ride for free on the Flying Dutchman Funicular, when an adult return ticket is bought for R70. This special ends on 30 September, so be sure to make it in time.

School Holidays

See an open-air movie

If you love the idea of escaping into a filmic fantasy world while surrounded by the outdoor beauty of the Mother City, the Galileo Open Air Cinema would be perfect for you. Grab your partner or gather your friends and enjoy classic films being played under the stars. PS. don’t worry about packing in treats as there are plenty of stalls selling all kinds of yummy eats from popcorn to wine.

Here are a few international bucket list ideas:

Swim with the pigs in the Bahamas

This human-free island called Exuma can be found in the Bahamas, it has sandy white beaches and is home to world-famous, noisy, grunting and extremely cute pigs. Though the pigs are wild, you’re more than welcome to feed and swim with them. So-called ‘Pig Beach’ is about 80 kilometres away from George Town, and can be reached via bout tour.

View the Northern Lights from a glass igloo in Norway

Seeing the Northern Lights is a bucket list item in itself, but there’s one way to experience it that is completely unique: from a glass igloo tucked into the snow at the Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort in Finland. So, pack in some warm clothes and spend a few nights in an igloo. The Northern Lights is at its best from August through to late April.

Take an Ice cold dip in Canada’s Lake Louise

This crystal clear body of water, one of many glacial lakes located in Banff, Canada, is probably the best place to take the most Instagram-worthy images. Brave the icy cold waters and hike the Big Beehive trail, which houses a tea house with chai tea lattes to help you warm up after your dip – all of these make for great selfie views!

Temple-hop in Thailand, Malaysia and Cambodia

Thanks to short, cheap flights, country-hopping in this part of the world is easy and affordable. While sites like the White Temple in Chiang Rai, Thailand and Angkor Wat in Cambodia are must-sees, once you’ve explored the grounds and snapped photos, you can easily move on. Choose your top three to four in the area and create a week-long temple-touring itinerary that will make your Instagram feed the envy of all your friends.

Dine with the view of the Eiffel Tower in front of you

Cliche? Maybe. But there’s no denying the wonder of this Parisian monument — especially when lit up at night. The structure is arguably the most iconic monument on earth. Simply gaze at its splendour, or book dinner with a view. Les Ombres located on the rooftop terrace of Musée du Quai Branly has one of the best views of the Tower and great food. Or go for a cruise with Bateaux Parisiens.
