Shelley Finch has shared an incredibly inspiring message about remembering those in needs during the chilly weather that Cape Town is having.
While the rain in Cape Town is SUCH a blessing, it’s also something that makes our fellow Capetonians’ lives very difficult (understatement of the year!) Let’s show our gratitude by taking care of each other over the next few days. Give this post a share and spread the love. Here are some ideas on what you can do to help:
1. If you’re expecting your domestic worker or gardener to come to work in this weather, please make sure that they have an umbrella and a sturdy raincoat. A pair of wellington boots would be AMAZING for all sorts of reasons. If you’ve decided to give them the day off, please make sure that you still pay them.
2. Big Issue, Funny Money, newspaper sellers, traffic light entrepreneurs, car guards and those gents who sit outside hardware stores waiting for a day of labour will probably not be able to work for the next few days which means that they’ll be without an income. If you do spot one of them out-and-about, please be generous. Give them more than the usual, buy them a cup of coffee or soup, hand over a small bag of groceries. Raincoats (with hoods) and wellies would be most welcome!
3. Support The Haven Night Shelter WO Cape Town‘s Buy A Bed Campaign. R60 buys a homeless guest a bed to sleep in for 5 days. You can give someone a warm bed for R12.00 a DAY!! Donate here: https://www.haven.org.za/buyabed/
4. Gather up some old warm clothes, blankets, food and take a drive around the city. People in need will find you.
5. Buy a thermos flask (they cost about R100 from a Crazy Store), fill it with hot soup and find someone in need. Leave the flask and some packets of ‘cup a soup’ with them. They’ll find someone to give them boiling water.
6. If someone walks into your shop, office, etc asking for boiling water, pop the kettle on!
7. If you’re a coffee shop owner, ask your customers whether they would like to buy a cup of soup/coffee for a person in need. R10.00 should be more than enough to cover the cost of a disposable and recyclable cup, plus the ingredients for a cup o soup or Ricoffy. Throw in a sandwich if you can!
8. Last but not least, there will be PLENTY of security guards who will have to be out and about in the rain and cold all day or overnight. A warm cup of coffee or tea will be most welcomed.
Let’s take care of each other out there!
