A collaborative partnership between local organisations has seen the Sweetwaters community gain invaluable agricultural skills and transform six hectares of land into flourishing vegetable gardens.

Pietermaritzburg, South Africa (05 February 2025) – Thanks to the collaborative efforts of like-minded organisations and stakeholders, the community members of Sweetwaters have been empowered to cultivate a brighter future for themselves.

A partnership between the Natal Midlands Development Programme and the Duzi-uMngeni Conservation Trust (DUCT), with support from the Social Employment Fund (SEF), has yielded remarkable results.

Their agricultural programme has transformed six hectares of land into thriving vegetable gardens, providing valuable skills and a sustainable livelihood for the community.

This initiative was largely made possible through the Virtual State Programme, a community development project that bridges the gap between government and communities through civic education. The programme played a crucial role in securing the land, paving the way for Sweetwaters’ agricultural journey.

With funding from the SEF and additional support from the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and local businesses, the community has planted cabbages, potatoes, and beetroot.

Together, young and old are diligently tending to their gardens, with the goal of selling their produce to create a sustainable income source for themselves and their families long after the initial funding has been utilised.
