The Green Point DHL Stadium doesn’t just host winners; it’s a winner itself! Recently, the famed stadium won a gold international award at a ceremony it also got to host.

Green Point, South Africa (06 December 2024) – DHL Stadium stands proudly in Green Point. It’s a place of sport, community, historic moments and the reason behind almost every excessively busy Saturday in the Atlantic Seaboard suburb. Now, it’s also a place of victory, and not just because of the winners it has hosted.

The DHL Stadium recently won gold at the prestigious International Project Management Association (IPMA) Global Project Management Awards, a ceremony held at the stadium itself!

The awards commend projects that adhere to excellence and innovation. For the stadium, its upgraded pitch project was a sure candidate, thanks to its innovative hybrid grass system that integrated natural grass with synthetic fibres.

The upgrade has put the stadium on par with global venues like Twickenham and Stade de France, offering durability that far exceeds conventional fields. It’s also got a refreshed durability where it can now withstand six times more traffic. Not to mention, it’s got a 15-year lifespan.

The team behind the upgrade were commended for navigating many complications to stick within their tight 12-month timeline. Another kicker of success was the sustainable element of the upgrade that saw 1,750 cubic metres of excavated materials reused, as well as the focus on an optimised irrigation system.

The more events the stadium can host, the better the local economy can perform, thanks to the tourism-driven SA side. And to have sustainable efforts intertwined in this growth is a fantastic feat. As such, the award strongly reflects on South Africa!

“I am proud of the DHL Stadium’s achievement,” shared Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis. “This was a necessary and important project, executed perfectly. The Stadium is providing one of the busiest and the preffered venue for big events in the country.”
