Disney has just unveiled The Boy & The Octopus, a heartwarming holiday short that combines the magic of childhood, the wonder of friendship, and the spirit of the season—crafted by none other than Taika Waititi.

Global (13 November 2024) – Disney has just gifted the world an all-new holiday short film, The Boy & The Octopus, and it’s nothing short of extraordinary.

This heartwarming story, crafted in collaboration with Oscar-winning filmmaker Taika Waititi, premiered today on YouTube and has already captured the hearts of viewers across the globe.

“For generations, Disney has been an ever-present part of the holiday season all over the world, and this short builds on the enduring connection that so many families have with Disney during this special time of year,” shared Asad Ayaz, Chief Brand Officer at The Walt Disney Company.

“We’re thrilled to collaborate with Taika Waititi on this timeless story of childhood friendship against the backdrop of this magical season.”

The story follows a young boy who befriends an octopus during a seaside holiday. This curious cephalopod decides to tag along for the ride—quite literally perched on the boy’s head! Together, they navigate the joys of everyday life, the magic of the village festivities (with the octopus cleverly concealed beneath a Mickey Mouse beanie), and ultimately, a heartwarming journey of self-discovery. The boy realises his octopus friend’s longing to explore beyond their shared world and devises a touching plan to make that dream a reality.

This short isn’t just about the magic of the holidays—it’s about the simple, everyday moments of friendship that make life meaningful.

“The story manages to connect the feelings that you get around the holidays – the joy, the goodwill, everything – with those same emotions and sensibilities you get from Disney films,” said Waititi.

“I think they go hand in hand, and it’s the perfect match – and only Disney could have made something like this… with me.”

And there are so many delightful “Easter eggs” to everything Disney! Fans are in for a treasure hunt with nods to beloved characters and stories, both classic and modern. Keep your eyes peeled for “Goofy,” “Buzz Lightyear,” “Nemo,” “Iron Man,” and even “R2-D2.” There are also charming references to Moana (2016), Lilo & Stitch (2002), and Toy Story (1995), along with subtle tributes like “Chip Potts” from Beauty and the Beast (1991). Each detail adds to the magic, making the film a true delight for all ages.

The music is equally enchanting. A live 60-piece orchestra recorded a stunning rendition of The Little Mermaid’s “Part of Your World” at Abbey Road Studios, bringing depth and emotion to the octopus’ longing for adventure. It’s the perfect melody for a story about dreams and discovery.

Social media is abuzz with love for this short, with viewers pouring out their emotions:

“Why does this beautiful video make me feel like I’m about to cry? It was the most perfect Christmas video ever. Thanks, Disney.”

“…and after this heartwarming short film, and with a tear in my eye, I declare the 2024 Christmas season officially open.”

“This is so sweet and full of heart. Thank you, Taika Waititi. The way you see the world is magical.”

“Oh my heart, I loved that! Who’s cutting onions?”

It’s hard to say why we’re all teary-eyed over a CGI octopus. Maybe it’s the lingering nostalgia from “My Octopus Teacher”, or perhaps it’s simply the reminder that the greatest journeys start with a dream. Whatever it is, The Boy & The Octopus has tapped into something truly special.

Thank you, Disney, for this gift, for reminding us of friendship, to dream big, and for officially kicking off the holiday season with a splash.

If you haven’t watched it yet, grab a tissue (or two) and dive into the magic. You won’t regret it.
