South Africa (09 April 2026) – For many parents sitting beside their child in a hospital ward, access to basic necessities like food and toiletries is not always guaranteed. It’s in these moments that initiatives like Footprints 4 Sam step in, offering practical support where it’s needed most.

The organisation has recently delivered 120 “Super Sam Hero Buckets” to state hospitals across South Africa, ensuring that families caring for seriously ill children receive some relief during extended hospital stays. Packed with essential items, the buckets are designed to ease the daily burden faced by caregivers who often spend long periods away from home.

Melissa Williams Platt, Co-Founder of Footprints 4 Sam and Sam’s Mum says this is to bring a sense of hope.

“Our colourful buckets bring rainbows of hope and dignity into paediatric wards and homes across the Country. Each bucket represents more than just supplies, it’s a gesture of compassion, reminding families that they are important too”.

This latest round of deliveries reached hospitals in multiple provinces, including Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital and Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital in Johannesburg, Paedspal in Cape Town, and General Justice Gizenga Hospital in KwaZulu-Natal. The aim is to make sure no family feels completely unsupported while navigating a child’s illness.

The initiative forms part of Footprints 4 Sam’s broader work, which focuses on supporting children with life-limiting conditions and the people caring for them. Since 2017, the organisation has steadily grown its impact, providing hundreds of thousands of meals, thousands of toiletry items, and comfort goods such as blankets, clothing and soft toys through its various programmes.

Bringing the buckets together is a collective effort. Volunteers and partners work behind the scenes to pack and distribute each one, with logistics support ensuring they reach hospitals safely and on time.

“These deliveries are powerful example of what can be achieved through collaboration. From the packing teams to the delivery partners, every person involved has helped us bring a sense of hope and humanity into homes where it is so deeply needed.”

At its heart, the initiative is about more than just meeting physical needs. It’s about recognising the emotional toll families carry and offering a small but meaningful reminder that they are not alone.

“This is Sam’s Legacy, hope in the midst of the pain. Hope through the provision of the very simple basics needed to live. With our support these incredibly brave families feel seen and less alone, as they navigate the complex and emotionally draining medical journey alongside their sick children.”
