After years of working overtime to keep rescued animals warm and cosy, SPCA Midrand’s tired washing machine finally got a well-deserved break!
Midrand, South Africa (19 January 2026) – Running an animal shelter comes with immense responsibility, from providing veterinary care and nutritious meals to giving vulnerable animals the love they deserve until they find their forever homes. It is a massive undertaking that also comes with a whole lot of laundry!
The SPCA Midrand’s washing machine has been under significant pressure lately, processing endless loads of dirty blankets used to keep our furry friends warm and comfortable. However, this past week brought an unexpected yet incredible surprise for the team.
Two long-time supporters, Fatima and Tervando Fernandez, called to say they would be dropping off another donation.
“Little did we know that this donation would be a brand new 24kg Washing machine,” the SPCA team shared with excitement.
“We could not believe our eyes, and we are so completely overwhelmed with joy and gratitude! This machine exceeded all expectations, and words simply cannot express how extremely grateful we are to the Fernandez for coming to our aid.”
The team wasted no time, successfully setting up the new machine the next day and was ready to start its first load. The new gift immediately took so much pressure off the team and the current machine.
“Needless to say, we could comfortably load far more blankets into each wash and now keep up with all the blanket piles that need to be washed daily for our animals.”
It takes a community to care for vulnerable animals, and the Fernandez family proved just how much a single act of kindness can matter. Their surprise donation of a heavy-duty washing machine has turned a daily struggle into a celebration for these local animal heroes.
SPCA Midrand extended its heartfelt thanks to Fatima and Tervando for their wonderful support as well as to Antoinette, who made a donation toward the purchase of a new machine following their appeal.
