Twenty-one talented artists showcased their soul-stirring paintings, drawings, sculptures, and photography, which explored diverse social themes, at the First Thursday pop-up exhibition in Cape Town.
Cape Town, South Africa (11 November 2024) – It can be so fascinating to witness a passionate artist reveal their work after days or weeks of crafting it to perfection, sharing a piece of their soul and the core message behind their masterpiece with a wider audience.
Emerging artists from across Cape Town communities got to do just that as they showcased their work at the First Thursday pop-up exhibition held last week at the SA Sendinggestig Museum in Long Street.
Supported by the City of Cape Town Community, Arts and Culture Development Department’s Emerging Artists Programme (EAP), 21 artists got to share their artworks and personal stories that connect deeply to themes of identity, migration, land, heritage, and language.
The artists hail from various communities across the city, including Kuils River, Diep River, Mitchells Plain, Newlands, Parklands, Heideveld, Muizenberg, Mowbray Langa, Parow, Belhar, Wynberg, Gugulethu, Salt River, Atlantis and Milnerton.
Their unique stories reflected the diverse identities and backgrounds that make up our colourful country, each piece adding to a larger conversation about community and self-expression.
“For many of the artists, it was the first time exhibiting their work and introducing their talent to a wider audience. This marks a significant step in their creative journeys.
“It is a privilege to give these talented artists a platform to share their incredible work with the public,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia van der Ross.
By exploring drawing, photography, painting, and sculpture, these artists conveyed experiences that reflected their individual perspectives.
By supporting and nurturing these artists, this initiative has remarkably fostered creativity, cultural diversity, and community engagement.
The EAP supports under-resourced artists in the early stage of their careers by providing them with training, mentorship, networking opportunities and exhibition platforms.
Another First Thursdays pop-up exhibition will be held on 5 December as well as an Exhibition Readiness Workshop on 23 November, to help artists prepare.
Aspiring artists who wish to participate in these events can apply by emailing emerging@capetown.gov.za.
