Secret Scarves 2022 is live! People are already finding scarves scattered throughout South Africa and taking them to keep warm through the winter months.

South Africa (06 July 2022) – Today is the day, and the secret can finally be let out!

For the past six years, the 67 Blankets for Mandela Day KnitWits have placed scarves all over South Africa for those in need. This year marks the 7th year of this fun annual event.

The KnitWits have once again risen to the challenge by hand-making thousands of beautiful scarves that will be draped on trees and poles or distributed to various organisations on the 6th of July, 2022. The event is known as “Secret Scarves” and aims to give people the opportunity to pick out a scarf they like without the pressure of someone watching.

The cities and towns are always dropped in a rainbow of colourful scarves this time of year, which are freely available to be taken by any passer-by. As always, a love note is attached, reading ‘I am not lost. If you are cold and need me, please take me. Love, 67 Blankets xxx.’ This year, the notes have been translated into all eleven official languages.

There are five locations in Johannesburg, one in White River, one in Gquberha, three in Cape Town, one in Mossel Bay and one in Bloemfontein. All KZN scarves were rerouted to Gift of the Givers for distribution to people in need.

The one location in Johannesburg, St Teresa’s School, did their secret scarf drop at 7:30 am this morning, before the pupils started their school day.

This initiative always kicks off every year around the wintertime. Participants around the country have spent the last few months knitting and crocheting beautiful scarves to distribute right before our next cold front hits the country.

The scarves were hung from 3 pm onwards.

Hip hip hooray!!!
Shhh… The SECRET is out
It’s our #SSS !!
It is our SCARF day!!!
All around our beautiful land
At precisely three
Our labours of love in hand
We will hang on trees in parks
Where the larks
will in unison sing our sweet love
Along the streets, along the railings
On bridges and along the margins of the bay
May God grant us our will and way to
Bring cheer and warmth to all
Miles and miles of scarfs and smiles
