Being trapped indoors during wintery storms is torture for children that love being outdoors, the Home of Hope pulled out the wool and taught children how to knit.
Table View, South Africa (17 July 2024) – Children living at the Home of Hope used their time indoors, staying away from the recent Cape Storm, to learn to knit. The skill was adopted eagerly by the young minds, and before long, they made progress in knitting.
Home of Hope is a non-profit organisation that cares for abused and abandoned children in South Africa, especially those suffering from Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) – permanent brain damage caused by prenatal exposure to alcohol. The home is based in Table View, Cape Town.
They run various programmes, giving these children opportunities to flourish in the arts, sports and academics. Whatever a child’s heart desires, they hope to make a reality.
Whether there is an aptitude for playing rugby, a love for gardening or a desire to paint. The home nurtures these skills, giving each child the opportunity to explore what will bring them joy.
The chance to learn to knit was borne of staying safely away from the chilly weather and it was well-loved.
“Our children are embracing the cozy vibes this winter season by knitting during the day.
We love watching them start from nothing, unleash their creativity, and develop new skills while crafting adorable knitted items for themselves, such as scarves and gloves.”
