Massimo’s in Hout Bay has been named the best pizzeria on the African continent by the 50 Top Pizza awards which took place in Naples, Italy.
Hout Bay, South Africa – Massimo and Tracy are a fantastic couple who opened an Italian restaurant in Hout Bay called Massimo’s in 2009.
They are incredibly passionate about food, their clients and South Africa!
They started a “pay-it-forward” campaign at the beginning of 2015 to make it easier for the Hout Bay community to give back. Massimo’s clients can buy one or more R10 ‘virtual’ slices of pizza, and for every six slices sold, Massimo’s will deliver an entire pizza to a local charity or institutions.
The list of the beneficiaries changes regularly as they are voted by customer suggestions. In 2018 Massimo’s distributed more than 500 #payitforward pizzas and this year they are just over 300 pizzas.
Massimo’s have also introduced a community project system where selected foods automatically donate to chosen charities, so you get to enjoy your favourite meal and give back without any effort.
When the droughts hit the Western Cape last year, they shared some fantastic tips on how restaurants could stay water-wise.
It is now a full ten years since they opened and they have just been bestowed with a great honour. During the Pizzeria Awards hosted in Naples, Italy, the restaurant was named the best on the African continent.
This is the first year a pizzeria from the African continent has been honoured at the award ceremony. Massimo, who spoke to Pippa Hudson from Cape Talk, called it the Oscars for pizza.
We could think of no better restaurant to receive such an excellent title. Well done to Massimo and his entire team who do everything in their power to make South Africa better.
