A large part of the Overcome Heights Informal Settlement was reduced to ashes last week, leaving over 102 families devastated. As panic and despair consumed the community, a beacon of hope emerged as Living Hope’s dedicated volunteers provided immediate care to those in need.

Cape Town, South Africa (25 November 2024) – When panic and despair broke out as a fire swept through the Overcome Heights Informal Settlement last week, destroying 102 homes, a glimmer of hope shone through for the devastated families left to pick up the pieces.

Shining as heroes in the moment of utter chaos, Living Hope’s dedicated Community Response and Community Based Healthcare Services teams swiftly mobilised to aid the victims. They provided immediate care to vulnerable mothers with newborns, the elderly, and those injured in the fire.

The teams also coordinated the distribution of essential supplies, such as food, clothing, and hygiene items in addition to compiling a list of the affected residents for SASSA with the help of local community leaders and City of Cape Town Disaster Response.

With over 300 people affected by the fire, Living Hope remains undeterred by the scale of the disaster and continues to provide much-needed support to these families where resources allow.

While the smoke may have cleared, the community continues to grapple with the aftermath. The urgent need for donations of hygiene items, clothing, and food remains, with every contribution making a tangible difference in the lives of those affected.
