Project Hope SA just needs to put together a few more gifts to help bring Christmas cheer to 32 children from the 1000 Hills Football Club. These children, aged 11 to 17, have found a sense of belonging and purpose through the club, but many continue to face hardships and loneliness.

Valley of a 1000 Hills, South Africa (08 November 2024) – For many of us still caught up in the daily hustle and bustle of life, it’s almost mind-boggling to think that the festive season is almost upon us! And while the year-end holiday season is a magical time with the promise of family time, fun outings and treats – for many little children, it can be a painful reminder of their loneliness.

Hoping to fill this void with a little bit of joy and spoils, Project Hope SA has made great progress in putting together 80% of the Christmas gifts for the many children they support.

These children, aged 11 to 17, are part of the 1000 Hills Football Club. They’ve found a sense of belonging and purpose through their dedicated coach, Philani Shezi—a local hero who serves as a father figure and a beacon of hope for them.

For these kids, soccer is more than a game; it’s their passion, their identity, and a lifeline steering them away from the wrong paths that many bored kids are tempted by, Project Hope shares.

“We’ve made great progress, with 80% of our Christmas gifts arranged, but we’re still short of presents for 32 children—and it’s weighing heavily on us.

“With that in mind, we’re reaching out, hoping for a business, group of friends, or a family who might step in as heroes themselves, helping us gather those last 32 gifts before December 1st,” the organisation said.

The non-profit, nestled in the Valley of a 1000 Hills near Hillcrest, is dedicated to giving children from impoverished backgrounds an awesome childhood through various programmes and partnerships with preschools.

Each gift, wrapped in a decorated shoebox, is valued at about R250 and includes toothpaste, a toothbrush, soap, washcloth, soap, deodorant, a soccer ball and some sweets.

“We’d be overjoyed if you could either purchase and wrap the items into a shoebox yourself or, if it’s easier, donate, and we’ll handle the rest. If you’re outside of Durban, you can send the gift to us through PostNet or PUDO.”
