One small act of kindness can spark a ripple that changes the world – and with #RAK16, it’s your turn to start the wave.
Johannesburg, South Africa (02 February 2016) – It’s officially time to spread some kindness – the third year of Random Acts of Kindness kicked off on 1st February, and getting involved couldn’t be easier!
We all want to make a difference, but sometimes we just need a little nudge in the right direction.
This whole movement began with one small but powerful act. Back in the day, I flipped the script on #neknominations – a reckless drinking game – by using my nomination to do something meaningful. I spent R20 (about $2) on a meal for a homeless man, filmed it, and shared it on social media to inspire others to “pay it forward.” That video went viral, clocking over 780,000 views and inspiring thousands of similar acts of kindness around the world.
What’s even more incredible is how those simple acts snowballed into tangible change – from millions of lives impacted to three dedicated feeding schemes launched in Canada, the USA, and Ireland, which are still running today.
But here’s the thing: doing good doesn’t need to be complicated or time-consuming. That’s the beauty of the #RAK movement – it’s all about simplicity and starting small.
What is #RAK16 all about?
This year, we’re building on the idea that by changing one thing, we all have the power to change everything. Whether it’s buying someone’s coffee, donating shoes you no longer wear, or just sharing a smile, it all starts with one small action.
Last year, the campaign trended globally for over two months, reached millions of people, and the hashtag #RAK15 was seen by more than 90 million people. Together, we’ve shown that kindness is contagious.
So, for #RAK16, we’re sticking to the original concept: perform one small act of kindness, post about it to inspire others, and challenge your friends to do the same.
Need ideas? We’ve got you covered!
- Here are just a few simple ways to get started:
- Leave a book you loved on public transport for someone else to enjoy.
- Take a homeless person to lunch – not just buying a meal but spending time with them.
- Volunteer at an orphanage or animal shelter. (Dog washing, anyone?)
The list is endless, and the impact is immeasurable.
New this year: RAK Cards and the Event Notice Board
To take things up a notch, we’ve introduced two exciting elements:
- RAK16 Cards – Download a standard pack for ideas on how to spread kindness or create your own customised cards to inspire others.
- Event Notice Board – A platform where participants can post their #RAK16 events to rally support and gather more kindness warriors
It’s that simple: Start where you are, use what you have, and do what you can.
I’m nominating every single one of you to get involved. Trust me, your one small act of kindness could spark a ripple effect that changes the world.
