The Special Kneads Café in Johannesburg was started by a mother who wanted better opportunities for her daughter but the café is is need of some special love from the community as they have to find a new home!
Kim Rundle was inspired to open the Special Kneads Cafe by a doggy daycare her daughter worked at and decided to follow in its unique footsteps. The doggy daycare was set up as a way for special needs teens to find work and Kim wanted to create the same environment for adults who needed work too.
The daycare was started by Tamara Coumbis for her step-son. He needed work and had a passion for animals. It was at this doggy daycare that Kim Rundle met Tamara. Kim’s daughter is also special needs so the mothers became close.

Kim started Special Kneads which has been running for 4 months in their current premises but have been forced to find a new home for the cafe. Apparently the council are not allowing the coffee shop to run on the land they were given by friends… so it’s up to the community to save the little gem in the heart of Johannesburg.
Good Things Guy have featured the Special Kneads Cafe twice before in an article and podcast and believe the work they are doing is so incredibly important so we’ve set up a campaign on Backabuddy for 2 reasons:
- To raise as much as we can to assist them with a new home for the cafe whether that’s paying the rent for a year, or buying a property for them… the sky is the limit when it comes to community love!
- To raise awareness about the cafe in the hopes that we can find a sponsored home for them, or even get more community members to support when they do! You can help by donating, or just by sharing this campaign!
Not only will the campaign save a cafe, but it will always save jobs and create a space for generations of other special needs young adults to work while serving the most amazing coffee & treats too!
