Sidumo Nyamezele, a St John’s music teacher, was selected to lead the University of Johannesburg Choir at the World Choir Games and won big!

Music educator and head of African music at St John’s College led the University of Johannesburg choir to victory at the 10th World Choir Games.

Sidumo Nyamezele is a well-known and respected music teacher at St John’s College. He teaches music theory and African music at the school.

Because of his incredible music talent, he was selected to lead and conduct the UJ’s Choir in the folklore a capella category at this year’s choir games held in Tshwane.

“The World Choir Games are the Olympics or world cup for choirs. So it was an extreme honour to take part,” said Nyamezele.

The UJ choir was made up of 55 people and Sidumo led them in the competition’s folklore category with a 15 minute medley of African a capella pieces. The choir scored an overall score of 95 per cent in this section and were declared the winners.

“To be honest when you are on stage you do not know what the score will be. When we received the accolade and the weight that it carries, it was so exciting.”

We spoke to a representative at St John’s College and they said they were very proud of Mr Nyamezele.

“Sidumo Nyamezele is employed at St John’s College as a music teacher, choirmaster and music theory teacher.  But he is by far more than just an educator  – he is passionate about all musics, and as such has become a bridge builder at the multicultural St John’s College where he teaches African music to boys from Grade 0 to Grade12. We are incredibly proud of his achievements and honoured to have him as part of our team.”
