Every week I get to see and experience things that make me laugh, cry and sometimes ugly-sob into my popcorn… and the Friday Five is where I get to share them all with you.
South Africa (23 August 2025) – Fridays have always had a special kind of energy. They’re the start of the weekend, the signal to exhale, and for me, they’re also home to one of my favourite features on Good Things Guy… The Friday Five.
Think of it as your go-to guide for good things: movies, series, music, books, restaurants and all the lekker extras that make life that little bit brighter. It’s a round-up of the things I’ve been loving, experiencing, and sometimes crying my eyes out over (I’ll explain later).
After a little break, it’s back. Ja, after a couple of weeks of my schedule being mental, I’m back in the zone and able to put together my weekly collection… even if it’s on a Saturday.
The Friday Five isn’t just about recommendations; it’s about sharing stories, moments, and discoveries that make me pause, smile, or feel deeply. It’s also where I get to take you along to movie premiers, events and launches that I’m lucky enough to attend. The things that make this job so much fun.
So grab your coffee, or pour yourself that glass of wine if you’re reading this later in the day. Here’s this week’s Friday Five.
🎬 Movies that we need to talk about!
🦸🏻♂️ Superman
I went in expecting a standard superhero movie. I came out a little changed.
The film digs into Superman’s battle between his Kryptonian heritage and his human life as Clark Kent. It’s about truth, justice, and the human way… things that the world sometimes writes off as “old-fashioned.” But here’s the thing: it’s simple, it’s powerful and I believe it’s exactly what we need right now. It reminded me that good can win. Even when the odds aren’t in its favour.
Oh, and then there’s Krypto. The dog. The unexpected scene-stealer who, for me, may just be the real star of the movie.
Verdict: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Now at the cinema.
👮🏻♂️ Cop & A Half
Shot across South Africa, unapologetically bold, and wildly entertaining, this film is proudly ours.
Jonathan Boynton-Lee and Trevor Gumbi star as a mismatched pair thrown together to bring down a drug syndicate in Joburg’s underbelly. It’s crime, comedy, chaos and action… all rolled into one.
I loved every moment. Not just because it’s packed with energy, but because it’s a proper South African story, unapologetically rooted in who we are.
Verdict: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Now on Amazon Prime.
📺 Series you need to see!!!
❤️🩹 Overcompensating
This one got me. Right in the feels.
The show follows Benny, a college football player struggling to accept his sexuality, often overcompensating as he tries to appear as something he’s not.
It’s funny. Outrageous. Relatable. And unexpectedly tender. Yes, I cried a few times. What makes it so special is that I could see myself in so many of the characters… who I was then, and who I am now. And that kind of connection doesn’t happen often.
Verdict: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Now on Amazon Prime.
😱 The Institute
A Stephen King adaptation that actually works.
A teen genius wakes up in a mysterious facility full of kids with unusual abilities. They all got there the same way, and none of them can quite work out why.
It’s suspenseful, it’s clever, and while not perfect, it’s good… better than most attempts at King’s work.
Verdict: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Now on MGM+.
🎧 Music that you need to add to your playlist!
If your weekend doesn’t have a soundtrack yet, let me help.
🎶 Halsey – Gasoline
Halsey is back… and she’s reminding us why she’s one of the best. This track is raw, bold, and impossible to ignore.
🎶 Maroon 5 – Love Is
This isn’t the Maroon 5 you’re used to. And yet, it is. Nostalgic but new. It feels like reconnecting with an old friend who’s grown in all the right ways.
🎶 Olivia Dean – Man I Need
Currently blowing up on TikTok. And for good reason. It’s catchy, emotional and will probably be stuck in your head all weekend.
I’ve curated all of these (and a few extras) into a playlist on Apple Music. Sorry Spotify fam, I’m team Apple. But trust me, you’ll want this playlist on repeat.
🌍 Places to Go: Sun City
Some places are just destinations. You book, you visit, you leave. And some places, if you’re lucky, become part of your story.
For me, Sun City is one of those places. And Sun Vacation Club is the place to be when visiting.
I’ve been coming here since I was little, and the memories are stitched through my life like a favourite old jersey: long Summer days at the Valley of Waves, clapping along at concerts I was too young to fully understand (but old enough to feel the magic) and breakfasts that went on so long we practically needed lunch straight after. It’s also my mom’s place. The one she loves more than anywhere else. And every August, for the last couple of years, we pack up and head for her birthday weekend. It’s become our annual family tradition, my mom’s weekend birthday away.
This year, Sun Vacation Club picked up on that. They surprised us with an upgrade to Lefika Villas. We stayed there last year and the resort decided to spoil us again. And it is special. Not just because the space was beautiful (it is) or because we had room to sprawl and laugh and relax (we did). But because someone noticed. Someone valued the years of memories and decided to add another one to the list.
That’s the thing about places like this. They’re not just good for tourism (although they are), and judging by the fact the Valley of Waves was buzzing in the middle of winter, that’s a good sign for our economy. They’re also good for people. For families. For reminding us that joy isn’t always about travelling far, sometimes it’s about going back to the places that know you.
While we were there, I asked to see what was new. I wanted to write an article to thank Sun City for the Lefika upgrade. And it turns out, quite a lot (is being upgraded).
The Sun Vacation Club has had a refresh, “The Aviary” and “The Reserve” both feel modern, airy, and inviting.

And across the resort, there’s a quiet hum of upgrades, as if Sun City is making sure the magic that’s kept people coming back for decades is still alive for the next generation.
It made me think, we often talk about tourism in big numbers: how much money it brings in, how many jobs it supports. And that matters. But what also matters is the way it keeps our own stories alive. My mom’s birthday weekends. Your first holiday away from home. That one trip where everyone got sunburnt but no one cared. The laughter echoing off the water.
Sun City has been part of South African holidays for generations. As has Sun Vacation Club. It’s been a backdrop for family milestones, first dates, honeymoons and reunions. It’s a reminder that travel isn’t always about ticking off new countries. Sometimes, it’s about returning to the places that hold your happiest memories… and making more.
🎙 One More Thing: The Podcast
Don’t forget to check out my podcast, Good Things with Brent Lindeque. It’s where I get to sit down with South Africans who are doing remarkable things. People who are changing lives in big ways, small ways, and everything in between.
On the latest episode, I chat with the incredible team from Edenvale Care Centre Hospice. They’ve turned an ordinary house into a space filled with extraordinary love and care, offering dignity and comfort during life’s most vulnerable moments. It’s proof that kindness isn’t just nice… it’s powerful.
Life is busy. Headlines can be heavy. But every Friday, I hope this little corner of the internet reminds you that good things are always out there. Sometimes on screen. Sometimes in song. Sometimes in the places we return to again and again.
Always worth noticing. Always worth celebrating.
