A world first has come to Cape Town, and dog lovers, this one’s for you! The Museum of Dogs is here to celebrate the dogs of South Africa through everything from personal stories to art and photography:

Cape Town, South Africa (13 August 2024) — Few cities love their four-legged citizens as much as Cape Town does. Head to a variety of spots in town, along the Atlantic seaboard or out in the suburbs and you’ll be met with dog-friendly restaurants and cafes dime-a-dozen. Or venture through more artsy corners and you’ll find massive murals acting as incredible odes to pooches. There are doggy day spas, hotels and even an annual Doggy High Tea. So, it’s only fitting that the Mother City has welcomed an entire museum dedicated to man’s best friend; the world’s first Museum of Dogs has officially opened its doors!

Situated on 95 Keerom Street by the Company’s Garden, the Museum of Dogs stands proudly as something of an open lover letter to dogs.

“The Museum of Dogs celebrates the myriad ways in which dogs impact our lives. Our dogs are often the only consistent thing in a very unstable world,” share’s the Museum of Dogs team.

With six exhibitions on display, any dog enthusiasts will meet a pooch’s paradise:

  • The History of Dogs in South Africa
  • The Influence of Dogs in Culture
  • Personal Stories on How Dogs Have Influenced People
  • A Photography Exhibition by Emma O’Brien
  • A Ceramic Exhibition by Tania Babb
  • A Short Film

And yes, well-behaved dogs on leashes are more than welcome as the museum team have spent a lot of time ‘doggy-proofing’ the space.

Additionally, the museum invites anyone who has a story to share about a dog that changed their life (in big, small, funny or beautiful ways) to get in touch and potentially become featured in this part of the exhibit.

Hopefully, through the act of more doggo-centric celebrations, more people will be encouraged to support the many, many animal shelters greatly in need in the City and beyond. After all, what’s a dog-loving city if all dogs aren’t loved?

You can find a list of animal shelters here, and more information on the Museum of Dogs here.
