The University of the Western Cape (UWC) announced that they have opened 9 science labs for disadvantaged schools in 2017, that’s 57 since 2011
The subject of science in underprivileged schools has been boosted by UWC. They set up 9 new science labs across the Western Cape. The opening of these labs has been spread over the last three days (18 – 20 October 2017). UWC-SLCA, in conjunction with Garden Cities Archway Foundation and the Western Cape Education Department, has built dozens of state-of-the-art science labs over the years.
The hard work put in by all the parties involved has meant that 57 labs have been built since 2011. Each science lab is set up with smartboards, microscopes, and more. UWC also offers support and training to practising science educators, to get learners involved in science activities, and to allow both learners and teachers to work and experiment in a safe environment.
“We have to start with the basics in terms of supporting teachers to have the confidence to teach science with an advanced level of understanding, knowledge and skills,”
“Similarly we have to be creative in providing learners with opportunities that will draw their interest and willingness to learn.”
“Developing a culture of science teaching and learning will be a good start to improve NSC and other assessments,”
“Having a confident and knowledgeable science teacher in a conducive environment provided by the UWC Science Learning Centres is a step in the right direction.” – Prof Shaheed Hartley, Director of UWC-SLCA
