The Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) turned World AIDS Day into a vibrant celebration of life and health. They hosted a colourful walk at uMngeni Valley Nature Reserve, where young people gathered to learn, socialize, and have a blast.

Howick, South Africa (10 December 2024) – In one of the most colourful and engaging ways to spread the core message about the significance of World AIDS Day, WESSA hosted a vibrant Colour Walk to observe the day at uMngeni Valley Nature Reserve.

Youngsters got to walk, socialise and enjoy an epic splash of fun with bright colour powder bags at the event, which served as an incredible way to engage, educate and empower our youth about an epidemic that affects thousands of lives and families across the country and millions more beyond.

South Africa has made significant progress in addressing the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and there are many achievements in awareness, science, and medicine to celebrate. Numerous scientific advances have been made in HIV treatment, leading to a much better understanding of the virus. More individuals are now receiving antiretroviral treatment, which has contributed to a decrease in HIV infection rates, the Health Department confirms.

“It’s been over 40 years since this virus was first recognised in 1981, and it remains a significant challenge, particularly in South Africa, which has the highest percentage of women living with HIV.

“But knowledge is power! By understanding how to protect ourselves and support those living with the virus, we can make a difference,” WESSA Marketing Manager, Subashni Govender said.

The environmental and educational organisation’s CEO, Cindy-Lee Cloete, also joined in on the festivities of the day. She delivered an inspiring environmental education talk, reminding the youth of their role as future custodians of both their health and the planet.

The WESSA team and youth from the local schools and communities they work with in the area proudly celebrated with vibrant colours, meaningful conversations, and impactful actions in a continued mission to educate, empower, and inspire change!
