A simple smile to someone who is having a rough day is a truly kind gesture. As the world commemorates International Kindness Day on 17 February, here’s how you can spread the love:
Pay for a parking ticket
If the person in front of you in the queue doesn’t have change to pay for their parking ticket and you have some extra coins, why not give it to them? There’s nothing worse than needing R2 for parking and having to draw cash. There might come a time when you need some bucks for parking and a good Samaritan will return the favour.
Take an extra sandwich to work
There is always someone less fortunate than you who will appreciate a snack or a meal. It doesn’t have to be fancy or expensive, it’s the thought that counts.
Buy a cancer patient some flowers
We all know of someone who is battling the disease, why not perk up their day by dropping by with a nice bouquet of flowers.
Send some pet food to an animal shelter
Animal shelters are always in need of pet food so why not find a shelter online and order some pet food to be delivered to them. As an added bonus, add some yummy pet treats to the little haul.
Drop cake and hobby items at an old-aged home
Visit a local old age home with cake, biscuits and other treats, spend some time chatting to them and engaging. This is a great idea to do as a group, that way more people get to chat and engage with each other. Donating unused wool, puzzles, DVDs, books and games also offers a great selection of entertainment.

There are so many charities that can do with a helping hand. Volunteer at an organisation you care about, whether it’s an animal shelter, an orphanage or an old-age home. An hour’s visit can do wonders and put a smile on someone’s (or some doggie’s) face.
Say thanks when someone gives way
There are some great drivers on the road. If someone gives way, acknowledge them with a (polite!) hand gesture or flash your lights or your hazards, to say thank you. You’re sure to put a smile on their dial.
