A man’s generosity has brought a wave of relief to six children, along with their devoted Crisis Mom and carers, who faced the prospect of a major upheaval as their shelter undergoes some major reno work.

Durban, South Africa (09 June 2025) – In the words of an anonymous author who wrote, “Happiness doesn’t have just one address”, the staff and children of the Domino Foundation’s Babies’ Home have been blessed with a temporary new place to call home.

The Babies Home, situated at 125 Adelaide Tambo Drive for 18 years, has been the victim of Durban borer and damp, which have conspired to set the roofing structure up for a total makeover.

As a result, the six little ones and their dedicated Crisis Mom and carers have been in need of a transition home while engineers, builders and roofing specialists put together a safe, waterproof covering to withstand the rigours of weather, “wildlife” and time.

An urgent call for temporary accommodation for the duration of the work was posted on social media and in local community publications.

In a heartwarming turn of events, the plea was heard, and a generous benefactor, a kind man, offered his property of three bedrooms and two bathrooms to the Babies’ Home programme as a gift to the children and the organisation.

And to top it all, in the spirit of serendipity, the interim address is just down the road!

House mother Precious Thabethe described packing up the paraphernalia, which inevitably is part of loving and nurturing a home full of children:

“We were prepared for what was going to be a major upheaval, but when we discovered that we would only have to move down the road, we all heaved a collective sigh of relief. Now, our volunteers, friends and donors will still find us easily, and the two children who go to preschool can get there with no extra effort.”

Precious and her team were effusive in expressing their gratitude to their benefactor, who, like the no-name fellow who penned the line at the start of this piece, wishes to stay anonymous.

She added that after just a few days at their new address, the entire Babies’ Home cohort is very comfortably (and happily) settled in.

With Mandela Day loading, anyone wanting to make a delicious homemade meal to add love and support to this happy family in their transition to the temporary Babies’ Home can contact Precious on 031 110 7030.
