Children being given a chance to hear for the first time is incredibly heartwarming, and this Mandela Day, the Foundation for Children with Hearing Loss in SA is hoping to do just that!
Pretoria, South Africa (15 July 2021) – The Foundation for Children with Hearing Loss in Southern Africa hopes to raise funds to help children hear for the first time this Mandela Day.
The Foundation was established in 1997 “to make a difference in deaf education”. With the use of modern technology (hearing aids, cochlear implants, classroom amplification systems), new possibilities have opened for deaf children. By including them in mainstream education, they can acquire normal spoken language with the necessary support and thereby reach their full potential.
The organisation previously featured on Good Things Guy in 2019 when a little Ghanian girl with a rare disease was given the gift of hearing. Her story touched so many lives and went viral.
The Foundation established the Eduplex, a mainstream school for inclusive deaf education, which serves as a model for inclusive education internationally. Since its inception, the Eduplex has had a 100% Grade 12 pass rate, with many deaf children attaining subject distinctions. All deaf children have attained tertiary education exemption.
Over the years, the vision has been expanded to include financial support to deaf children and adults and establish an online training institute (Eduplex Training Institute or ETI to benefit even more deaf children ultimately.
To date, professionals and parents have been trained in inclusive education from more than 32 countries worldwide.
