Matric Art Exhibition Celebrates Creativity and Legacy

Celebrating creativity and personal expression as Uplands College Matrics showcase unique bodies of work exploring the theme of Secrets and Surprises

Mpumalanga, South Africa (20 October 2025) – The halls of Uplands College came alive on Friday, 10 October, as the much-anticipated Matric Art Exhibition opened, showcasing the creative talents of the Class of 2025. Leading the opening was Samantha van der Mer Merwe, the school’s top Visual Arts pupil, setting the tone for a celebration of artistic skill, innovation, and imagination.

This year’s exhibition invited visitors to explore the IEB theme of Secrets and Surprises, and the results were nothing short of impressive. From intricate beadwork and immersive video installations to smoky drawings and classic oil on canvas, the 15 matric pupils each presented work that was honest, thought-provoking, and full of unexpected twists. Each piece reflected personal journeys, bold experimentation, and a fearless approach to creative expression.

This addition of the theme and different interpretations emphasises that art is personal, and every piece is a fresh perspective on the same theme. It sets the tone for celebrating diversity in creativity throughout the exhibition.

Alongside the exhibition, the school also unveiled a stunning mosaiced legacy bench, made possible by the generous support of the Guthrie family and the dedication of the Junior Art Club alongside the Class of 2025. Beneath the Natal Mahogany canopy, the bench is a vibrant, interactive space where future art pupils can sit, journal, or simply soak in the beauty of their surroundings. A lasting tribute to the creative spirit of this year’s visual arts cohort.

The exhibition remains open for viewing, offering the Uplands community and visitors the chance to celebrate the talent, dedication, and imagination of the school’s young artists.
