Some knew him for his “dog whispering” gift, while others appreciated his kindness while out on the field. Mzoxolo ‘Mzo’ Cuthalele didn’t just work at Mdzananda Animal Clinic. For 14 years, he served every person and animal with compassion and has left behind a legacy of love that will never be forgotten.
Khayelitsha, South Africa (29 September 2026) – There are people whose presence, though not necessarily loud, is deeply felt and leaves a lasting impression. Mzoxolo Cuthalele was one of those people.
Having dedicated over 14 years of his life to the Mdzananda Animal Clinic and Shelter, Mzoxolo, affectionately known as Mzo, was far more than just part of the furniture at the organisation; he was its very heartbeat.
The news of his recent passing has left the Mdzananda family heartbroken as they navigate running the clinic without someone who was such an integral part of it.
“It is so difficult to imagine our clinic without him,” the Mdzananda team shared.
Mzo started his journey with the organisation as a theatre assistant, quietly preparing patients and using his natural, “dog whispering” gift to put anxious and aggressive animals completely at ease.
“Within moments of speaking softly to them, a dog that was fearful or difficult to handle would relax completely, trusting him instantly so we could care for them without trauma or struggle,” the team reflects.
Later, as a driver and field worker, Mzo took that incredible gift out into the Khayelitsha community, handling call-outs, ambulance cases, and mobile clinics where his gentle touch meant everything.
“Whenever a difficult case came in, everyone knew to call Mzo.”
Described as an all-round beautiful human being, his passing has left a massive hole at the Mdzananda clinic, and those who knew Mzo best will miss him not only as a brilliant colleague but as a good friend.
